- Rashtrapati Niwas Shimla, formerly known as Viceregal Lodge and later the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, stands as an architectural jewel in the picturesque landscapes of Shimla. Evoking the grandeur of the colonial era, this iconic structure has witnessed historical decisions, academic pursuits, and the transformation of its identity over time.
- Built between 1884 and 1888, the Viceregal Lodge was designed by British architect Henry Irwin as the summer residence for the Viceroy of India. The architecture reflects the Jacobethan style, blending Jacobean and Elizabethan elements. This majestic lodge became a symbol of British colonial power, hosting crucial discussions and decisions during pre-independence India.
- In 1964, the Viceregal Lodge underwent a transformative journey to become the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS). This transition marked a shift from its colonial past to a new role dedicated to fostering advanced studies and research in humanities and social sciences.
